London Borough of Lewisham

Why this Borough?

Lewisham Council is a high performing organisation and we are dedicated to making the borough the best place in London to live, work and learn.

If you want to affect real change and help build something truly special then Lewisham is the place to be. We are a Council that values people who are adaptable, innovative and seek to make a positive change. We positively encourage continuous learning and development, and you will have the opportunity to do this both in your role and through a range of development opportunities and programmes.

The Council has ambitious plans to meet the ongoing challenges in relation to the cost of living, housing crisis and increasing demand for local services. We’re leading the way in reimagining the future of town centres with an ambitious vision for the regeneration of Catford, which includes the major refurbishment of Broadway Theatre.

The Building for Lewisham programme is committed to delivering new social homes across the Borough. The transfer of services managed by Lewisham Homes to the Council in 2023/24 aims to provide a more joined up service, strengthen resident voices and provide better value for money.

Lewisham today is a successful and cosmopolitan part of London occupied by energetic, creative and diverse local communities. People here benefit from attractive residential neighbourhoods, great local schools and a huge number of parks and green spaces. We have excellent transport connections to the rest of London and the wider region, with Canary Wharf, the City, London City Airport and the new international rail terminal at Stratford all within easy reach of the borough. The London Overground is now connecting more of Lewisham with central London and the rail and tube network.

We are also committed to continuous learning and improvement. Following an invitation to undertake a Corporate Peer Challenge in 2021 we are continuing to make progress around financial planning and management. A post implementation review is also being undertaken to maximise the benefits following investment in a new financial system.

Finance will play a pivotal role in what we do, how we do it and where the Council’s £1billion of annual spend in the Borough is committed; working with colleagues and partners to create efficient and sustainable change that ultimately improves outcomes for our residents.

With ever decreasing resources, the finance team is central to making sure we can protect the things people value most, making sure the services we provide are the best they can be and working every penny of taxpayers money as hard as we can.
