What attracted you to the scheme?

I first saw an advert for the scheme in November 2004 on a graduate recruitment website as I was beginning to think seriously about a career in Finance and this looked unique as it was within Local Government. Although I wasn't successful the first time, I applied again in October 2005 and was accepted on to the scheme!

What sorts of projects have you worked on since you joined the scheme?

I started at Lambeth in February 2006 and as a CIPFA Trainee Accountant my role involves undertaking various placements within Finance and Resources and other finance teams within Service and Support Departments. As part of the scheme we undertake 9-month placements, where we engage in everything from closedown of accounts to budget planning. The objective is to learn and experience as much as possible about the real-life applications of theory whilst maintaining knowledge of current practices and applying them in the organisation.

What was your experience of studying for CIPFA?

I also began my CIPFA studies at the CIPFA Education and Training Centre (CETC) in February 2006.The balance between studying and managing workloads has been good so far largely due to the support that trainees receive at Lambeth from managers and directors. The great thing about studying at CETC is the class mates you meet and friends you make.

I have just passed my first set exams for the Diploma stage. Provided I pass the remaining 7 exams in their first sittings I should finish by December 2008. I hope to settle into a permanent role as a management accountant preferably within Finance and Resources itself or in my current placement (Strategy and Corporate Services).

Why would you recommend the scheme to others?

I would definitely recommend the SLT scheme to others. Right from the start my confidence has been boosted by the fact it provides the best of both worlds in terms of work-based training as well as extensive study support. It really is ideal as it gives the practical experience and skills necessary to understand the theory of accounting as well as the brilliant opportunity to work in of the broad range of finance activities including Audit, Corporate Finance, Systems Accounting, Risk and Insurance thereby enabling me to gain wide experiences and knowledge.
